LinkedIn ‘Trending Hashtags’ Are a Sham!

Here is a little secret about hashtags!

Trending hashtags don’t matter!

A trending hashtag isn’t anything more than a feel-good factor right now!

And this is the fault of LinkedIn!

Since I have been active on LinkedIn, every week, at least 3 of my posts have been trending.

But what does a post that is trending actually mean?

It means that people found the content interesting and have read it. That’s it!

It does nothing more than that!

I’ll tell you why.

If you notice, once your posts start trending, the views do not increase as much as they should!

After all, a post that is trending should be catching a lot of eyeballs and therefore, even more people should be reading my post after it has trended.

Right?

Logic says this should happen!

But it doesn’t.

See the example below.

1) My post started trending for “DigitalMarketing” around 48 minutes ago. (Post Link)

2) Around 21 hours ago, it had 201 reactions and close to 3,325 views.

3) After it started trending, it had just 201 reactions and 3,340 views!

What does this even mean?

It means that a trending post doesn’t contribute to increasing your visibility at all!!!

That is why I say trending hashtags are just a sham!

They don’t contribute at all in helping you reach more people!

What can be done?

LinkedIn has to improve its algorithm. Period.

People spend a good amount of time creating a good piece of content so that it trends and reaches maximum people possible.

I am not asking that every post that trends has to reach over a million views!

But my point is simple- if a post is trending in a hashtag, it should get little push from the LinkedIn algorithm.

LinkedIn, if you’re reading this post, please ensure that users are able to start going through the top posts in the hashtags they follow!

This can be done very easily-

  1. Start showing the trending posts more frequently in other people’s feeds.
  2. Start showing the top posts of the hashtag users follows in their feed.

If I am wrong in my assessment, please correct me and let me know what purpose does a trending hashtag serves?

Looking forward to more discussion on this.
